William Earnshaw was born in November 1881 at Colne, Lancashire and was a weaver upon his enlistment at Burnley on 18 November 1901 for just one years' service. He served in South Africa during the Boer War from 14 December 1901-10 September 1902, being discharged on 12 September 1902 (Queen's Medal & single clasp confirmed). He does not appear to have been made a Serving Brother in the Order of St John.
