Tom Curtis was born on 3 June 1878 at Vernham, Hampshire and joined the King's Royal Rifle Corps in April 1897. Having seen active service during the Boer War with the 2nd and 4th Battalions, he was discharged in 1907, taking work as a Postman in Horsham, Sussex. Curtis re-enlisted upon the outbreak of the Great War and joined the Royal Sussex Regiment on 11 November 1914, being discharged sick on 14 January 1916 (entitled Silver War Badge). He joined the Royal Naval Air Service on 19 June 1917, latterly joining the Royal Air Force. Finally discharged in 1920, Curtis returned to his work with the Royal Mail. Awarded the Imperial Service Medal in February 1935, he died in Horsham in 1939.
