James Etherington was born in November 1867 at Upwaltham, Petworth Sussex and was a carter upon his enlistment in the Royal Sussex Regiment at Chichester on 23 January 1888. He served in South Africa during the Boer War from 10 February 1900-17 January 1901, being discharged in February 1901.
