Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Natal, Orange Free State, Transvaal (4609 Pte. H. Prince, Glouc: Regt.), mounted as worn, suspension re-affixed, unofficial rivets, very fine

Henry Prince was born in 1877 at Lymington, Hampshire and enlisted in the Gloucestershire Regiment on 17 June 1895. He was wounded in action due to a gunshot wound to the right forearm (30 October 1900) and subsequently captured at Nicholson's Nek the same day - "Mournful Monday", Gazetteer refers:

'This was the objective of a column commanded by Lt-Col F.R.C. Carleton, The Royal Irish Fusiliers, three kilometres north of the hill Cayinguba (Caimguba) where it was forced to surrender to Cmdt L.P. Steenkamp.'

Prince was released from captivity on 5 September 1900 at Nooitgedacht (16 km east of Waterval Onder on the Delagoa Bay railway line) having been forced to march east from the main Prisoner camp at Waterval, Pretoria. He was discharged on 21 June 1914.
