Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, South Africa 1901, dated clasp loose upon riband (7534 Pte. J. Palethorpe, Derby: Regt.), good very fine

John Palethorpe was born in 1881 at Radford, Nottinghamshire and was a collier upon his enlistment on 5 March 1900. He served in South Africa with the 4th Battalion during the Boer War from 23 March 1900-10 May 1901 and was discharged on 4 March 1906.

He was captured at Roodewal on 7 June 1900, Gazetteer refers:

'A farm, postal agency and railway station on the Bloemfontein-Vereeniging line in the Orange Free State (Koppies district; Free State), nine kilometres south-west of Koppies. The garrison was attacked by Chief-Cmdt C.R. de Wet's commando on the night of 7 June 1900. Having refused a summons to surrender, the garrison was shelled by a 120 mm Krupp howitzer which was put out of action, but the surrender at Rhenoster camp allowed three more guns to be brought into action and it was forced to surrender at midday. A considerable quantity of supplies were seized and destroyed.'

British newspapers reported that he had been released a month later and had arrived in Ladysmith by 18 July 1900.
