Sydney George M. Hattrick entered the war in France on 10 May 1915 with the rank of Lance Sergeant with 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. This battalion, which was part of 26th Brigade, 9th (Scottish) Division faced action at Loos in 1915. In fact the fighting they faced here was so heavy that the Divisional Commander, Major General Thesiger, was killed in the trenches of 26th Brigade by shellfire.
Taking part in the Somme Offensive the next year the Division's fighting around Longueval became so associated with them that the village was later chosen to play host to the Pipers' Memorial. Given little respite the division again fought during the Arras Offensive in 1917, taking part in both Battles of the Scarpe and later the First Battle of Passchendale before again being heavily engaged throughout 1918. Despite the intensity of the fighting Hattrick survived; having been promoted to Sergeant he was transferred firstly to the Machine Gun Corps and later to the Reserve on 24 February 1919.
