Thomas Alfred Abbott was born at Bolton, Lancashire. Enlisting with the Territorial Force on 31 October 1914, noting previous experience with the 1st Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. It is worth observing that Abbott stated contradictory ages on several documents but appears to have been between the ages of 34 and 40 as of 1914. He joined the war at Gallipoli on 14 November 1915 with 6th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Abbot took part in the evacuation of allied troops at the end of 1915, travelling to Egypt along with his unit. After refitting in Egypt, 6th Battalion joined the Tigris Corps in the attempt to relieve Kut, seeing action from April 1916. They continued to serve in this theatre for the duration of the war. Abbott was discharged to the Reserve on 21 May 1919.
