J. Metcalf enlisted with the King's Royal Rifle Corps on 30 July 1902. He entered the war in France on 13 September 1914 and continued to serve with 1st Battalion until transferring to the Northamptonshire Regiment. Whilst serving with this unit he was wounded, and consequently discharged on 10 January 1918; further entitled to a Silver War Badge (no. 307950).
