Horace Edward Henkesfeldt Clayton-Smith was born in 1890 at Rockferry, Cheshire and was a useful cricketer, playing for Pontefract CC (Wisden on the Great War; The Lives of Cricket's Fallen 1914-18, refers). He served in France with the 1st/5th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry from 13 April 1915 - alongside his brother - and earned himself a Military Cross. Clayton-Smith was killed in action on 23 July 1917 and is buried in the Ramscappelle Road Military Cemetery. These Medals were claimed by his father, living in Pontefract.
