British War and Victory Medals (588 Gnr. A. Harcus. R.A.), very fine (2)
[M.M.] London Gazette 18 October 1917
Alexander Harcus was born at Aberdeen, Scotland in 1893. Enlisting on 24 May 1915 with the Royal Field Artillery he joined the war in France later that year on 11 November. At some stage during the war his records note a gun-shot wound to the hand, however no date is provided to suggest when this occurred. Despite the award of a Military Medal in 1917 Harcus was not entirely a model soldier, being convicted of overstaying his leave on 27 August 1918. Returning from France on 18 October 1918 he was to remain in service for some time, not being demobilised until 31 March 1920. Returning to Aberdeen, Harcus lived on Wellington Road; he visited Quebec, Canada in 1921 but returned the same year. Further entitled to the Military Medal and 1914-15 Star.
