Ernest Harry Hollingworth was born at Cosby, Leicestershire. Having enlisted with the Leicestershire Regiment on 8 September 1914 he was posted to the 9th Battalion on 25 September 1914. This Regiment was initially stationed in England, joining the war in France on 29 July 1915 and entering the line near Tilques. They took part in the Somme Offensive from July 1916 however Hollingworth left before the end of the offensive, being transferred to 3rd Battalion on 19 August 1916. Having spent the remainder of 1916 on garrison duty with 3rd Battalion he was posted briefly to 1st Battalion on 2 March 1917 before being transferred again to 6th Battalion. He remained with this unit for the rest of the war, during which 6th Battalion was involved in a good deal of fighting, particularly during the Defence of Epehy in March 1918. Discharged to the Reserve on 15 April 1919 he re-enlisted with the Royal Army Service Corps on 12 August 1919 with the rank of Lance-Corporal; Hollingworth is further entitled to the 1914-15 Star.
