The British War Medal awarded to Sergeant W. B. Skinner, 44th Canadian Infantry, wounded in action on 2 June 1917 at La Coulette, Vimy Ridge
British War Medal 1914-20 (126132 Sjt. W. B. Skinner. 44-Can. Inf.), minor wear, very fine.
William Bremner Skinner was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 22 July 1886. Enlisting with 71st Battalion on 5 September 1915 at Woodstock, Ontario, he listed his previous military experience as four years with the 22nd Regiment. Promoted Sergeant on 6 September 1915 Skinner later attended a sniping course at Aldershot on 2 May 1916. Transferred to 44th Battalion on 28 May 1916 he joined the war in France on 10 August 1916. During the fighting at La Coulette, Vimy Ridge on 2 June 1917 he was wounded in action with his medical history stating:
'Wounded by mills bomb at La Coulette 2.VI.17, in right leg. below right knee, right thigh and middle finger right hand.'
Suffering badly from this wound he was operated on at No. 8 Stationary, Boulogne on 6 June, later receiving treatment at Whalley, Monks Horton, Walmer and No. XI Canadian General Hospital between 10 June-22 October 1917. Invalided to Canada on 16 February 1918 and invalided out of service altogether on 22 August 1918.
