Great Britain
1697 (22 March) indenture on vellum between John Shipman of London and his wife, Anne agreeing that should the two marry, £9,000 (£4,000 paid by Anne and £5,000 paid by Shipman) should be given to Robert Chaplin and his three associates to buy lands etc. to be settled for uses specified in the deed. Until the lands had been purchased, the money was to be put out at interest to be received by Shipman. The marriage had taken place and £4,000 left with no land purchased, so it was agreed that this be put into "the Stocke of the Publicke Banke of England". A very early example of moneys figuring in a marriage agreement being invested in the stock of the Bank of England, the Bank only having been established in 1694. Interesting
