Charles Prince of Wales (King Charles I)
1618 (10 April) warrant on vellum from Charles Prince of Wales to Sir John Villiers, Master of the Wardrobe to pay for "severall parcells of stuffe delyvered into our stable for our use and service" which are then listed in detail, including:
"Eight Hintinge Saddles of collour velvett laced and fringed with goulde and silver"
"Twelve Slipp covers of Leather lyned with Cotton"
"Cottons for lyneing of horseclothes for tender horses (and) Silke Rybbens of sondrie Collours for the horse Topps"
"Thirty payer of Spectacles of Black Leather"
Etc. with many more items intended for a most lavish hunting trip.
Unusual
Given at St. James. Signed "Charles P" at top left. Remnants of seal remaining at foot, paper with some soiling commensurate with age, remains of mounting and small pieces missing, not affecting the text.
Notes: As A. MacGregor wrote: "Both James (Father) and Charles were deeply imbued with love of field sports of all kinds", their dedication to the activity bordering on the fanatical. An interesting insight into the pastimes of these two monarchs.
