Sir John Fortescue
1592, a piece (116x95mm) from payment request, signed "J Fortescue". Scarce
Note: Sir John Fortescue (d. 1607) superintended the studies of Queen Elizabeth I before she became Queen and later became Chancellor of the Exchequer (1589-1603). James I dismissed him as Chancellor after Elizabeth's death which must have affected him. He wrote to James that he had served Elizabeth ‘my late mistress and dear sovereign 48 years, near about her person, with fidelity and sincerity of heart and mind’.
