1876-98, a series of four letters to Mrs Spencer, the wife of an English Army Officer based in India, whom he met during his 1875/6 visit to India.
1876, seven page letter initialled "AE", written from Abergeldie Castle (Sept 27th), referring to the delightful climate at a resort in India, "I have no idea who is to succeed Sir P. Wodehouse as Governor of Bombay but will not forget your wish that your husband should be appointed Military Secretary", writes of visiting the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland at Dunrobin, and other society news.
1877 (16 May) from the Marlborough Club with cover franked 1d. red, addressed to Folkestone, on the arrival of Mrs Spencer in England, mention of meeting her sister who has died, in Malta.
1878 (2 Jan.) from Sandringham to Mrs Spencer at Sandgate, the letter initialled "AE" with the original cover franked 1d. red, cancelled at Lynn with the Sandringham/Norfolk d.s. on the reverse, wishing Mrs. Spencer a happy new year and thanking her for a present.
1898 (13 Nov.), mourning stationery card and cover from Sandringham, franked 1d. lilac, cancelled at King's Lynn, Sandringham/Norfolk backstamp, to Mrs Spencer at Market Drayton, thanking her for birthday wishes "fancy it is 21 years since I spent it in India!" Initialled "AE". (4)
