1845 (4 Sept.) entire letter from Wellington to Devonport marked "registered" with rate marks of "2/4" and "6" (crossed through), probably carried privately to Sydney with oval "paid ship letter/sydney" datestamp (23.10) and a light strike of the rare "Registered/sydney" (White type R2) and signed in red ink "H.W. Petre"; the reverse with London straight-line "ship letter" in black, transit c.d.s. (7.3) and Devonport arrival c.d.s. (8.3). A very good cover and an exciting example of this rare Sydney registered handstamp

Pays 6d. registration paid in cash, 6d. for double overseas ship letter, the recipient paying 1/4d. for double private ship letter and 1/- U.K. registration.

This Sydney registration handstamp was only used between August to October 1845, this is thought to be one of only three in private hands. For a second example, see lot 132
