1858 (20 Jan.) blue envelope to Locarno, Switzerland bearing 1854 1/- dull blue horizontal strip of five and 1857 4d. dull rose-red pair with indistinct cancellation, bears London "d6" handstamp in black which has been crossed through in ink, second type "registered/g.p.o." dated oval (7.4), large crown/"registered", London Paid c.d.s. and "PD" in circle with Calais transit and "chargé" in black; datestamps on reverse with Melbourne despatch oval, Basel and Locarno arrival (12.4), there are five marks where the French wax seals have been removed. The 1/- stamps have been cut into at foot, the 4d. stamps with manuscript endorsement (probably from a Swiss clerk) and there is some soiling

The compulsory use of the registered stamp ceased on 5th January 1858. This is an early date for the new instructions
