Transit through London: 1857 (18 Oct.) entire letter registered to U.S.A. "Via Aachen per Russian closed Mail" and "Recommandirt franco", bearing 1850 3kr. blue (plate 3) and 9kr. yellow-green (type 3) (4), two of the 9kr. are just touched in one corner, otherwise the margins are generally good to large, cancelled by "32" open cogwheel, with semi-circle "bahnh. bamberg" despatch datestamp, handstruck "Chargé" in black, Aachen transit (25.10) and a superb strike of the Aachen crowned "registered" handstamp and a part strike of New York transit. There is a vertical folding crease and some light overall soiling. which does not detract from this magnificent and stunning cover.

The postage rate should have been 45kr. (6kr. German/Austrian mail plus 39kr. onward franking). There are only three known covers (all from this correspondence) which were franked with the foreign franking only and not receiving any surcharge; it is not known whether the sender paid the addition in cash or had local free franking privilege. An interesting and rare 39kr. franking. A cover of major importance from this German State to America correspondence. Stegmüller Certificate (2011).
