1861 (24 July) large envelope to solicitors in London bearing 1853-61 imperf. Napoleon pairs of 40c. reddish orange and 80c. rose (mixed margins) tied by petit chiffres "2221" of Nantes, with faint despatch c.d.s., "chargé" and boxed "PD" in red along with the rare Foreign Branch "france/registered" around crown (A&H 1499) in red and the standard-type London dated registered oval code "R" in red (25.7), the reverse with two transit marks via Calais, a poor strike of the boxed charge handstamp with manuscript insertion and red wax seals; there is a horizontal folding crease and trivial soiling. A superb example of this Foreign Branch named registered handstamp.

These crowned registration marks were issued for several countires or states; Prussia and Hamburg are both very scarce, all others are rare

For another example of the France crown registered, see lot 164
