1860 (9 Dec.) mourning letter to Lieut. Geoffrey Mairis, "Expeditionary Force North China" "Via Marseilles" bearing 1855-57 6d. and 2d. blue plate 8 tied by Clifton duplex, the reverse with London (10.12) and Hong Kong (23.1) c.d.s. By the time this letter reached its destination Lieut. Mairis was on his way home, redirected to London, the address side with London arrival (26.3) and handstruck "1d" in red. With the original letter which concludes, "... Come home the earliest opportunity you have ..."
Also 1860 (4 Dec.) a similar mourning envelope to Lieut. Mairis of the "Expeditionary Force, North China" re-addressed to Portsmouth, several backstamps including Hong Kong (12.2) and Portsmouth (13.4); without enclosure, otherwise fine. (2 coves)
