First Opium War
The Continued Opium Trade
1845 (10 Jan.) entire letter from David Sillas in Canton to Liverpool "Overland Mail via Marseilles" to be carried on the 'Water Witch' changed to the 'Island Queen' (both crossed through, the letter indicates using the 'Island Queen' via Bombay); rated "1/10" with boxed "INDIA", the flap with oval "forwarded by/lyall matheson & co/calcutta", framed Calcutta Ship Letter datestamp, London and Liverpool (5.4) datestamp; there is some light paper ageing. The contents mainly refer to silks and other fancy goods but, interestingly, mentions that many letters are being sent triplicate and some even quadruplicate (via Madras or Point de Galle). Both the 'Water Witch' and 'Island Queen' were two popular opium clippers
