Sir Henry Pottinger: 1842 (27 Aug.) British Foreign Office Internal Diplomatic Mail, the letter is from George Staunton (an opponent of the opium trade) from Leigh Park in Havant to Sir Henry Pottinger. In this letter he writes, "... I have felt so strongly impressed with the importance of losing no time in placing the administration of the law in our Chinese possessions on a better and surer footing, that i have thought it my duty to make several representations on the subject both privately and in Parliament ... I think an important step has been taken by placing at your disposal the service of an able Barrister of some years standing, who beside his acquaintance with general law, is also familiar with the great points of Indian Law and the Law of nations as administered by Her Majesty's Privy Council. Allow me to add that I feel assured that from my long personal acquaintance with Mr Johnson, that you will find him a most agreeable acquisition to your private society ...".
