1842 (4-8 Nov.) entire letter from Turner & Co in Macao to John Gladstone & Co., Liverpool, "Via Marseilles" and carried on the 'Hope', rated "2/8"; part of the flap with the arrival datestamp has been cut off but docketed as arriving on 2nd February; vertical filing crease and light overall ageing.
The letter includes various items of business as well as, "... HMS 'Columbine' with a portion of the first instalment of the six million dollars on board arrived at Hong-Kong on the 3rd inst. and sailed for England again on the 5th inst. Sir Henry Pottinger has already appointed a consul to reside at Shanghae, and we presume that similar appointments will be made at the different other open ports, as they are visited by the Plenipotentiary, on his way down here. The season is now advanced however to enable vessels to reach the different ports easily, and we do not anticipate that anything will be done in the northward this season."
