1842 (28 Sept. - 7 Oct.) part letter from Turner & Co in Macao to John Gladstone & Co, Liverpool, "Via Marseilles" and "per 'Victoria'", rated "2/8" with an oily strike of "INDIA" in large oval, the flap, "Recd Bombay 16th November Turner & Co" with London and Liverpool (9.1) datestamps; some of the folds have been reinforced with archival tape and the cover refolded; there is some overall ageing.


The letter finishes with, "We are still in ignorance as to when Sir Henry Pottinger is expected from the North and till his arrival nothing of consequence will be done. HMS 'Calliope' sails for long canal this day and she will shortly be followed by 'Blonde', 'Herald', 'Modeste' and 'Columbine' with the first of the six million dollars paid by the Chinese. The 'Calliope' has no part of this treasure"
