First Opium War
The Eastern Expedition
Arrival of Reinforcements
1842 (1 July) entire letter from Turner & Co in Macao to John Gladstone & Co, in Liverpool, "Via Marseilles", rated "1/8", the flap with London and Liverpool (8.11) datestamps; vertical filing crease.

The letter includes, "... We have had no arrivals from the North since the Plenipotentiary left this neighbourhood, and we are now looking most anxiously for some further accounts of the movements of the Expedition as we are entirely in the dark however as to the contemplated plan of operations to be pursued this season, it would be in vain for us to speculate on their probable results, but whatever line of policy may be adopted, we most earnestly hope it may have the desired effect of bringing about a settlement of our differences, and our trade with this Empire to recover from the depression it has long been laboured under.

Everything continues to go on quietly in this neighbourhood and confidence in peace being maintained in this Province seem to increase - Admiral Sir Thomas Cochrane arrived about a fortnight ago in HMS Ship 'Vindictive' having made the passage from England in the short space of ninety days. He has in the meantime, until the arrival of HMS 'Agincourt' removed his flag to HMS 'Blenheim' 76 at Hong Kong and the HMS 'Vindictive', we believe proceeds to join Admiral Parker's squadron"
. A good letter
