First Opium War
The Eastern Expedition
Arrival of Reinforcements
1842 (7 June) letter only from Lieut. Kirby "On board 'Pekin', Hong Kong Harbour" to his father. The letter gives some interesting details, "... We were then for eight days tacking to and fro in the entrance to the Gulf of Tung-Quin, south of Hainan, some days making a little north, on others losing one day as much as 30 miles ... There is so much uncertainty of sending letters from this place that as I am going on board the Commandant's Ship where the post office is and the 'Druid' man of war sails tomorrow for Bombay I will send off this little scrawl to let you know where I am. I wrote to you on the 5th May from Singapore. We are all well on board, Hillyard is still here. We sail for Chusan on Sunday 12th inst. Sir High Gough is with the outposts, I do not know when I may see him. It is reported that our regiment is to be in garrison at Chusan, Amoy, etc they are very healthy." A good military letter
