1842 (24 June) entire letter from John Silverlock in Macao to his father in Chichester "via Falmouth", rated "1/-" and with "INDIA" in large oval, the flap with "Recd Bombay 3rd September 1 1842 R S & Co" with London c.d.s. (14.11) and part Chichester arrival; free form filing creases. Early use of the reduced 1/- rate.
In the letter he notes, "... I start for Canton this evening. My return there need not cause you any anxiety as far as my personal safety is concerned, for you may be assured I should not go if I thought there was any real danger, many of my countrymen are now there, and more will soon join us, it must appear inconsistent to you that we can be trading peaceably at Canton while our Forces are fighting away in the northern part of the empire, but such is the fact and I hope it may continue..."
