The Renewed Blockade of Canton
1842 (4-17 Jan.) entire letter from Turner & Co in Macao to John Gladstone & Co., Liverpool "via Marseilles", rated at "2/8" and with "INDIA" in large oval, the reverse with a good strike of Richie Steuart and Co forwarding agent's cachet for receipt on 28th February, London and Liverpool (5.4) datestamps; sent by the 'John O'Gaunt'; two vertical folding creases.
An extract, written on 17th January, "The new forts and the obstructions of the river near Canton are rapidly being completed and we wait with no small anxiety to see what course the provincial government will then take. That all the force we have here now would produce no effect on their new defences seems the general opinion, and it is therefore but too evident that for the continuance of trade and our safe residence in Canton, we must trust simply for the interested forbearance of the Chinese and it must be remembered that their patience must be sorely tried by the system of seizing trading junks which is still carried on ..."
