1841 (11-20 Feb.) entire letter from Syn & Co in Singapore to Arthur Willis & Co. London "Overland" with boxed handstamp "via marseilles" and "INDIA" in oval, rated "7/-" in black ink; the reverse with oval framed "forwarded by/dixon, carter & co./bombay" handstamp across the join and London arrival c.d.s. (6.5); there are two vertical filing creases.


The second part of the letter includes the following information, "...A few days ago advices were received of the total loss of the 'Catherine Evans' bound from this to China & also that one of the Opium Clippers with 1300 chests of opium on board had been dismasted. Today we have HMS Larne in from Macao which dates from 12th inst the state of matters is as unsettled as ever. Capt. Elliot has gone to meet Keshen we suppose to carry on further negotiations which have hitherto been of such little service. It is quite time some settlement as made as in the meantime trade is suffering severely". An interesting letter which demonstrates the opium trade was still in operation
