First Opium War
The Kowloon Incident
End of the Blockade
1840 (11 Feb.) entire letter to William Leslie in Scotland from his son in Macao, marked "p Mames from China" and rated "1/4", the flap with unframed "liverpool/ship letter" and Edinburgh transit c.d.s. (8.6). A rather chatty letter dealing with various business and personal matters and includes, " ... if Govt do them duly in this important price level and pay us for the opium surrendered to Capt Elliot a/c the Chinese Govt, I will do pretty well last year as my share of profits may be £4,000-5,000... We have only two men of war here just now inc. 'Volage' 28 gun and 'Hyacinth' 18. The latter is a beautiful vessel and in glorious order. Her Captain Warren is a very nice fellow and a great friend of mine ...". Folding creases and some light soiling; a good letter containing much information
