BUY NOW: £37,000 | An Icon: A Beautiful Mint State 'Prince Elector' Guinea | MS64 | *Top Pop* | George I (1714-1727), 'Prince Elector' Guinea, 1714, small '17', retrograde Z-type 1, first laureate head right, rev. legend ends PR. EL, crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, edge obliquely milled, 6h (Stratos 90; Schneider II, 544; EGC 502; MCE 245; Spink 3628), a touch of die softness to highest points, otherwise a glorious mint gem with handsome cartwheel lustre, unquestionably amongst the finest extant of this sought-after one year type, in NGC holder, graded MS64 (Cert. #2815281-001) [*Joint Finest*] (Tied 1 of 4)

The MS64 parallel to this Georgian jewel can be found in the Bridgewater House dispersal (Sotheby's, 1972, lot 176) and when last offered for sale in January 2014 realised $25,200 USD (c. £15,000). Since then the market for high grade early English Milled Gold has accelerated to dizzying heights with the price realised for an MS61 Prince Elector from the Hayleigh cabinet achieving that figure in our Stratos spectacle (September 2020, lot 90). At this same sale an MS65 'Top Pop' 1726 2-Guineas achieved a World Record £57,600. Connoisseurs may consider this exclusive Guinea a fitting accompaniment to that Gem.
