Walter Ralph Smith enlisted with the 2nd South African Rifles as a Wireless Mechanic on 9 October 1915. Promoted to Sergeant on 6 December 1915 he was then commisioned into the 2nd Cape Corps as a Temporary Second Lieutenant. He suffered from frequent bouts of malaria during his service and died at 0155hrs on 22 November 1918 at hospital in Kimberley; sold together with copied research including medical and service records.
