1890 (27 Feb.) envelope addressed to the Lieutenant Commander of U.S.S. 'Palos', Chinkiang bearing Shanghai Arms 5c. brown well tied by Shanghai Local Post despatch c.d.s. and, on the reverse, a further despatch c.d.s. and a good strike of "customs/chinkiang" c.d.s. (28.2) in black; the remains of a wax seal have left a stain mark in the centre of the envelope, fine. Signed by Peter Holcombe

At the begining of the postal service it is thought that a steamship company acted as agents for Chinkiang. At this time the agency had been taken over by the Imperial Maritime Customs. They continued this service until 6 August 1894
