1894 (15 July) envelope to U.S.A. bearing Japan 5s. Koban tied by "i.j.p.o. shanghai/meiji 27" c.d.s. (17.7) with a very fine strike of "kewkiang/local post" dated oval in purple and, on the reverse, Shanghai Local Post (17.7) Yokohama (26.7), San Francisco (10.8) and Baraboo arrival (14.8). Both sides of this envelope have been affixed to backing card for protection.


Believed to be the earliest subscriber cover to U.S.A.
