Wessex, Edward the Elder (899-924), Penny, 'Exceptional Issues' - Floral type, c. 910-15, Chester, Buga, 1.55g [23.9 grns], 10h, +EADVVEARD REX, small cross pattée within inner circle, rev. BV-GA, within tendrils of floral device (Montagu 592 this coin; Lockett 521; SCBI [Mack] 759; CTCE 327d this coin; N.660; BMC IX; Spink 1079 the plate coin), probably struck by the 'Lady of the Mercians' for her brother King, with a beautiful rich dark tone flaired in recesses by further hints of iridescence, near extremely fine, and of equal rarity, with only four known, two of these in institutional collections
