Wessex, Edward the Elder (899-924), Penny, 'Early Phase II' - Horizontal-Trefoil type, c. 903-910, Chester, Dudig, 1.57g [21mm.], 4h, +EADVVEARD REX, diademed and draped bust in relief, neat lettering, rev. DVDIG | MON, divided by central pellet between two crosses, trefoil above and below (Rashleigh 235 = Lockett 2715 this coin; CTCE 16, and pl. 4, no. 6 this coin; N.651; Spink 1084 the plate coin), a 'totemic' coin that leaps from the pages of every sale it graces, lightly toned with a thoroughly arresting portrait albeit for touch of striking softness to hair, otherwise near extremely fine, a highly-prized numismatic rarity
