1859 (late July) unfranked envelope from the Cape to Devon, probably carried on H.M.S. Perseverance which arrived at Portsmouth on 7 September, Portsmouth and Portsea datestamps on face, no apparent charges which if put into the post at Cape Town should have been 6d. or 1d. if posted at Portsea; and 1859 (Nov.) envelope from Capt. Wainwright commanding H.M.S. Leopard off the coast of South America to Mrs. Maclear at the Royal Observatory at Cape Town, Simons Town and Cape Town oval datestamps on reverse, manuscript "6" on face though no indication of where the charge had been applied.
