Cape of Good Hope
1857-63 Union Steam Ship Co. and J.T. Rennie Lines
From Natal
1858 (10 Dec.) entire letter from Pietermaritzburg to Belleville, Upper Canada, showing very light oval-framed "post paid/p.m. burg", rated "1/2" and "1/8" and with "cape packet/devonport" and London (27.11) datestamps on reverse, letter written by D. Moodie, Speaker of the Natal Legislative Council and therefore may have passed free of colonial postage. Carried by the Rennie steamer Waldensian from Durban to Cape Town after the mail from Pietermaritzburg arrived late and a surf boat had to go out after her at a cost of £7.10s., and then by the Union steamer Phoebe to Devonport. A most unusual destination for mail from Natal at this time. Photo
