Prince George of Hesse
1705 (29 July) warrant signed to "Mr. Thomas Clarke, Storekeeper of her Majesties Ordinance at Gibraltar" ordering Clarke to "issue such Stores hereafter mentioned being for the service of this present Expedition", listing such items as: "Muskett Shott (100,000", Cohorn Mortars (29)"Iron Crows (2), etc.". Signed "George P. of Hesse". Document a little worn with some tears, one just barely touching the signature. An important document with relevance to the Twelfth Siege of Gibraltar during the War of Spanish Succession.
Prince George of Hesse (1669-1705) was head of the Austrian Army 1701-05 and Governor of Gibraltar. Prince George held off multiple attacks made by the Franco-Spanish forces during the siege which finally came to a halt in April 1705. Clearly the replenishment of supplies ordered here was influential in resisting the Franco-Spanish forces.
