Sir Robert Smirke
1806 (26 June) ALS sent from Albany in London to an unknown correspondent. Smirke writes "Finding the wall at the back of the closet, where the staircase is proposed to be made, in so ruinous a state, that to keep it would in all probability be attended with more expense than its removal, I have given directions that it be pulled down", continuing to explain that owing to this the work on the correspondent's property will be postponed, giving also his quote. Signed "Rob. Smirke".

Sir Robert Smirke (1770-1867) was an English architect who practiced 'Greek Revival'. This is a very early letter at the beginning of his career and could refer to his work on Lowther Castle - his first country house commission.
