The Tower of London
An interesting group of ALS (3) including 1877 (14 Sept.) letter on "The Tower of London" headed paper signed "Charles Maitland", Lieut-General of the Tower mentioning a letter from Henry Ponsonby "telling me that he had seen the rules. He asks me if the fact of the guards presenting arms to General officers does not interfere with the Palatial look of the Tower", admitting that he was only following "the order of 1796"; also two fine letters dated August 9 and 11 1880 to Sir Charles (Yorke) from the same correspondence regarding whether or not "the public shall be admitted at all hours of the day to any part of the Tower - unaccompanied by wardens", in the latter letter the Queen has seemingly agreed this arrangement and makes clear her desire that no "structural alterations which may spoil the historic memories or interfere with the general appearance of the Tower" will be undergone. Together with a copy of "Regulations for Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of The Tower of London". An interesting group.
