Thomas Ridout
Collection of letters written by Thomas Ridout from the Kutch province (Bhuj and Mandavie), 1822-24. Letters are, in their majority, dated to around his 21st birthday, addressed to his mother and siblings, providing an eye witness account of Britain's military and political involvement in local affairs, as well as his impressions of Bhuj and the vicissitudes of a young soldier's life. Details include the logistics of receiving letters from England and a detailed account of his expenses. Of particular interest to topographers is his list of Kutch places recorded to entertain his nephew. His style is lively and his hand elegant.
