Great Britain
William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke
1554 (12 April) letter signed 'Pembroke' from St. James' to Giles Gore as a call to arms as commanded by Queen Mary mustering "all my servants and tenants & others within my rules and office and to have same in a perfect readyness furnyshed with horsse Armour and weapon withall ye force they are able to make". Document complete with address panel and small tear along fold.

It is possible that Pembroke's call to arms is in relation to the unrest caused in previous months by Sir Thomas Wyatt in opposing the marriage of Queen Mary I and Philip II of Spain. Wyatt was beheaded a day before this letter was signed.
