A. J. McFazdean - or Sandy to his friends and comrades - was educated at Cambridge University, being a member of the University OTC and Amateur Boxing Club. Commissioned into the Parachute Regiment in 2002, he saw active service in Northern Ireland and Iraq, being promoted Captain on 9 February 2006. He was transferred to the Intelligence Corps on 6 March 2006 and retired in 2007, joining Morgan Stanley. Later working for Deloitte and presently at Credit Suisse, he has been married to Minister of State for the Cabinet Office Chloe Smith since 2013.
