M.M. London Gazette 19 April 1945. The original recommendation states:
'For marked gallantry in action at Monywa on the 20th of January 1945.
On the 20th of January 1945 during the assault on Monywa Naik Basant Singh was commanding a section of a leading platoon which came under heavy discharges and automatic fire. Quickly leading his section round to the left Naik Singh attacked the bunkers from which the fire was coming and himself reached the top of one, into which he dropped grenades. His section had in the meantime come under heavy fire from a third bunker and could not advance. Basant Singh covered their withdrawal himself until severely wounded, being blown off the top of the bunker by discharger shells. He managed to crawl back to his section where he reported to his platoon commander.
The courage and devotion to duty of this Naik saved his section from severe casualties and assisted in the recovery of the wounded. This is the third time that this non-commissioned officer has been wounded in action.'
A further note to the recommendation states:
'First in and last out in every action.'
Basant Singh was a Dogra Rajput from Daulat Chak, Gurdaspur.
