The Ice Axe supposedly carried by Sir Wally Herbert across the entire Arctic Ocean on his famous 3,800 mile British Trans-Arctic Expedition (1968-69) from Alaska to Svalbard via the North Geographic Pole

Ice axe, approximately 820mm in length, wooden shaft with iron fittings at either end, the silver metal casing to bottom engraved 'SIR WALLY HERBERT NORTH POLE 1969', a little knocked in places, otherwise good condition

A gift to Pen Hadow from Sir Wally Herbert, for his work in organising Sir Wally Herbert's Testimonial at the Royal Geographical Society, London, 18 October 2006.
