Ray P. McBarron served with the Royal Corps of Transport in Northern Ireland and the Gulf before transferring to the Royal Logistic Corps. During that previous service he undertook parachute training. He was serving with 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal in 2000 when he passed an Advanced Driving Course and also gained previous experience in the Close Protection Unit, Royal Military Police. Deployed with the Bomb Disposal unit in Kosovo, he was involved in the operations after the Podujevo Bombing, which cost the lives of 12 civilians. McBarron's unit were soon on the scene and diffused six other devices in the nearby area.

McBarron served with the Royal Military Police Close Protection Team in Afghanistan, June-December 2005. He saw further service in Close Protection in Northern Ireland as was also versed in handling custom weapons; sold together with his two identity tags, British Army Identity Card, certificates of qualification, besides Canadian Forces Longhorn Club Membership card and a number of photographs.
