'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty whilst acting as a runner. Though slightly gassed and once blown over by a shell and severely hurt, he repeatedly carried messages through heavy shell fire, and continued his duties for three days until completely worn out. His splendid efforts were invaluable.'

Married in 1913 whilst living at Philbeach Gardens, Earls Court, he served in France and was awarded his decoration near Holnon Wood over the course of three remarkable days dodging shells as a runner.
