(x) Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (R.M.A./5274. W. J. Fricker, Gunner. R.M.A.), extremely fine
William James Fricker was born on 31 May 1876 at Slough and enlisted in the Royal Marine Artillery on 12 June 1894 after one year's service with the 9th Lancers. A hairdressers' assistant by occupation, he forged a long career with the R.M.A., serving aboard a wide variety of ships and shore bases including Russell and Colossus.
Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal on 14 April 1918, Fricker was demobilised in May 1919 whilst in possession of five good conduct badges. It is possible that he utilised his pre-war experience as a swimming instructor for the R.M.A. in later civilian life. The husband of Myra Fanny Kerslake, he died at Plymouth in June 1959.
